Did you know that you could go to college to be a cartoonist? For those who relish the sequential art of words and pictures working in unison, Vermont’s Center for Cartoon Studies is the place to be.

In this quiet corner of White River Junction, students learn from a dedicated faculty like James Sturm, as well as from such visiting artists as Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware, Lynda Barry, among others.  The college is prominently featured in a new indie documentary, Cartoon College by filmmakers Josh Melrod and Tara Wray.

You can listen to an interview with the filmmakers discuss their experiences of filming at the Center of Cartoon Studies for a year to see what happens. Below are links about the college and an article featuring a podcast of a radio interview with Melrod and Wray; and a young cartoonist’s experiences visiting the Center of Cartoon Studies.

Seeing other indie filmmakers aim their cameras at this evolving art form is inspiring since I know Comics Are Everywhere will have an audience eager to learn more about the eclectic world of comics and graphic novels and the creators behind the work.
